What's Challenging?

What's challenging for you about providing services in the natural environment to families who are monolingual?

Here's what some professionals had to say at the ESPS 2018 world cafe session on natural environments:

  • Meeting the needs of Mixtec families
  • Finding translators (Atto, Bajo)
  • Scheduling in working families
  • Limited providers who speak other languages
  • Multi-ethnicity trust building
  • Immigration – fewer referrals, difficulty getting into homes for intakes and visits
  • Understanding cultural differences (to ensure respect)
  • Interpreters may not understand/be able to interpret educational lingo/language
  • Center-based intakes
